  • Students successfully completing AD 6 will be able to describe the relationship between psychiatric disorders and substance abuse.
  • Identify appropriate interventions for persons with co-occurring disorders with respect to their cultural, sociopolitical experiences, gender identity, and other issues of diversity
  • Students successfully completing AD 6 will be able to identify and assess the major psychiatric disorders that co-occur with substance use disorders.

Addiction: Prevention, Intervention, and Recovery AD 3
  • Students successfully completing AD 3 will be able to explain the relapse prevention process
  • Students successfully completing the course will be able to identify issues of cultural identity, ethnic background, age, and gender, in prevention, treatment, and recovery
  • Students will be able to compare and contrast historical and contemporary strategies for the prevention of substance use disorders

Case Management and Documentation AD 10

Family Counseling AD 9
  • Identify patterns of codependency and the typical characteristics of adult children from dysfunctional families
  • Accurately assess, identify and analyze family problems/needs and implement appropriate interventions that demonstrate acknowledgement and support of client’s disability, gender, sexual orientation, developmental level, culture, ethnicity, age and health status
  • Verbalize various forms and consequences of child abuse
  • Explain and apply the use of the genogram as a family counseling and assessment tool
  • Provide clients with psycho-educational resources on dysfunctional family dynamics, roles, values, and norms as they apply across families with diverse racial, cultural, economic, and sociopolitical backgrounds

Introduction to Laws and Ethics for Addictions Counselors AD 15A
  • Students successfully completing the course will be able to identify and apply ethical and legal requirements for addictions counselors.
  • Students successfully completing the course will be able to present case studies and identify clinical and ethical issues
  • Students successfully completing AD 15A will be able to identify the role of the intern in the clinical facility.
  • Students successfully completing the course will be apply ethical principles to analyze the techniques used by professionals in the field of substance use disorder treatment.
Issues in Domestic Violence AD 4
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the laws affecting domestic violence in the U.S.
  • Recognize the social, political, economic, and cultural context within which domestic violence and substance abuse exist
  • Assess, identify client needs, and implement appropriate interventions in relation to domestic violence in respect to client’s racial, cultural, economic, and sociopolitical backgrounds. .
  • Students successfully completing AD 4 will be able to explain the primary theories related to both causation and impact of domestic violence.
Law and Ethics For Addictions Counselors AD 15B
  • Students successfully completing AD 15B will be able to assess Substance Use disorders and related problems and decide on the appropriate level of intervention

Physiological Effects of Alcohol and Drugs AD 2
  • Understand the special service needs and staff precautions necessary when working with clients who may have HIV, hepatitis, STIs, or other communicable diseases.
  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of the basic metabolic and neurological processes involved in psychoactive drug use, including synergistic effects and risk factors.
  • Students successfully completing AD 2 will be able to describe the behavioral, psychological, physiological, and social effects of specific psychoactive substances on the user

Techniques of Intervention and Referral AD 11

Work Experience in Addiction Counseling A AD 82A
  • Students completing AD 82A will complete at least 50 % of their identified objectives

Work Experience in Addiction Counseling B AD 82B
  • Students completing AD 82B will demonstrate competence in their performance at work site
