Tom Edson volunteered for the Army in 1971 at 17.5 years of age, completed his basic training at Fort Ord (Monterey), medic training at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, and served at the Presidio base in San Francisco. He received deployment orders for Vietnam three times but was fortunately kept Stateside to serve at Letterman II General Hospital (Presidio, San Francisco), where he worked in the ER and surgery, serving the community and assisting fellow servicemen who arrived with orthopedic and internal injuries.

After leaving the Army, he enrolled at San Diego State University and UC Irvine on the GI Bill and completed a BA degree in Classics (Latin and Greek Philology).
