BNR Allyship LogoBasic Needs Allyship

The Basic Needs Allyship Training was launched in November 2022 in response to the growing need for campus-wide awareness and support for students experiencing basic needs insecurities. As more students at Mt. SAC face challenges related to food access, housing stability, transportation, and financial resources, our team recognized that solutions must extend beyond one department. This training was created to empower faculty, staff, and student leaders with the knowledge, language, and tools to respond with empathy and effectiveness. By creating a network of Basic Needs Allies across campus, we aim to foster a culture of care, reduce stigma, and ensure students are connected to the support they need to thrive academically and personally. Through the Allyship Program, we’re not just raising awareness — we’re building a community of advocates committed to student wellness, equity, and success.

What Allies are Saying

"Participating in the Basic Needs Allyship Program at Mt. SAC has been an incredibly eye-opening and empowering experience. It deepened my understanding of the challenges many students face related to housing, food security, and financial stability. The training provided practical tools and knowledge that I now use to better support students in my role. Being part of this program reminded me that small actions can make a big difference. I feel more confident in recognizing signs of need and connecting students to the right campus resources. I'm proud to be a Basic Needs Ally and encourage others to join in creating a more compassionate and responsive campus environment."

"The Allyship Program and training to me is something every center/faculty should participate in. So many students are going through hardships, and it feels good to be informed about the recourses our school has to offer them. When students' basic needs are met, they will be in a better position to succeed in their academic endeavors."

Food, Shower, Housing, and Other Basic Needs

"Food and housing challenges affect many students at Mt. SAC. If you are experiencing this, you are not alone. If these challenges are affecting your success in the course, let’s talk and I’ll share what I know about campus resources. If you feel more comfortable talking with someone else, many people are here to support you like Basic Needs Resources Program, Counselors, the Mt. SAC Health Center, your coaches or club advisor, and Mt. SAC staff at the many programs and centers on campus. Or if you would like to explore resources on your own, check out the Basic Needs Resources Program, Mountie Fresh Food Pantry, and the Basic Needs CalFresh Outreach webpages."
