American Language (AMLA) Writing Courses

AMLA 1A - College Composition for Non-Native English Speakers

4 Units (Degree Applicable, CSU, UC*)
*AMLA 1A is transfer-level and has equivalent transferability as ENGL 1A. AMLA 1A also satisfies the A-2 requirement for associate degrees. 
Prerequisite: Successful completion of AMLA 90 or appropriate placement. 
 
Description: Engages non-native English students in the reading and writing process with emphasis on college-level reading, critical analysis, research skills, and expository and argumentative composition mindful of purpose and audience while developing an awareness of fundamental principles of cultural competence and linguistic awareness that are inherent in language learning.

AMLA 90 - Accelerated Developmental Writing for AMLA

5 Units (Degree Applicable, CSU**)
**AMLA 90 satisfies the AAC2 and ASC2 requirement for associate degrees. 
Meets CSU General Education Breadth Area C2 for Humanities
May be taken for option of letter grade or Pass/No Pass

Prerequisite: Satisfactory score on the English Placement Test or successful completion of AMLA 80
 
Description: Develops reading, writing, and critical thinking skills to prepare English language learners for transfer-level AmLa 1A or English 1A. Focuses on multi-page essays, academic writing, synthesis, and analysis. 

AMLA 80 - American Language Intermediate Writing

5 Units (Not Degree Applicable)
May be taken for option of letter grade or Pass/No Pass
Lecture: 72
Prerequisite: Satisfactory score on the English Placement Test or successful completion of AMLA 70 or noncredit ESL Level 5 or 6 or VESL
Advisory: AMLA 32R taken prior or concurrently
 
Description: Intermediate to advanced accelerated writing for non-native speakers with an emphasis on preparation for academic writing, critical thinking, and vocabulary development. Moves students from creating paragraphs to essays.

AMLA 70 - American Language Basic Writing

5 Units (Not Degree Applicable)
May be taken for option of letter grade or Pass/No Pass)
Lecture: 72
Prerequisite: Satisfactory score on the English Placement Test or successful completion of noncredit ESL Level 4
Advisory: AMLA 31R taken previously or concurrently
 
Description: Basic to intermediate level accelerated writing and reading for non-native speakers with an emphasis on preparation for academic writing, critical thinking, and vocabulary development. Moves students from creating sentence clusters to paragraphs.
