Respiratory Therapy- Frequently Asked Questions

• • When should I apply to the program?
    You can apply at any time.  However, your application will be pending until you meet with a counselor to obtain an online Academic Preparation Checklist for the Respiratory Therapy program verifying that you have completed all the prerequisites.  
  • I applied to the program but have not received or heard anything.  When can I expect to hear from the department? 
    You will receive a confirmation email from TechandHealth@mtsac.edu within 2 weeks after starting your application.
  • How are students accepted to the program?
    Students are accepted to the program on a first come first serve basis based on the checklist date created by a counselor verifying that all the prerequisites have been met.
  • What are the required prerequisite courses?
    • ANAT 10A Introductory Human Anatomy or ANAT 35 Human Anatomy
    • ANAT 10B Introductory Human Physiology or ANAT 36 Human Physiology
    • CHEM 10 Chemistry for Allied Health or CHEM 40 Introduction to General Chemistry
    • MATH 51 Elementary Algebra
    • MEDI 90 Medical Terminology
  • Is there a recency requirement for prerequisite courses?

    There is no recency requirement for prerequisite courses.

  • I have completed the application including the required checklist.  What happens next?
    An interest letter will be emailed to all applicants in March.  Please follow the instructions in that email to confirm your continued interest in the program and to maintain your spot on the applicant list.  We will update the list and send an email with your admission status (provisional admit, alternate, deferral) in April.  Official admission into the Respiratory Therapy program is based on the checklist date AND your attendance at the mandatory orientation in May.
  • What books do I need? 
    Check the Mt. SAC Book Rack site for a list of books for each class.
  • Can I use a used book for Laboratory? 
    No, these books will include another students answers to exercises that will distract from learning.
  • Can I miss a class session and still succeed?
    If you are doing very well in class, the damage from missing class may still be manageable. If you are not doing well in class, the damage from missing class will be unmanageable. We do not recommend missing class in any case.
  • How can I get credit for a Mt. SAC course if I took a similar course at another college?
    Fill out a variance form that can be obtained from the Tech & Health Division Office and have it signed by the Department Chair and Division Dean.
  • What do I do if a course I need to complete my degree is not offered the semester I want to graduate?
    Students can meet with the Department Chair and ask if you can take another course in place of the one that is not offered.
  • How do I get a Mt. SAC certificate once I have completed the certificate requirements?
    Students must fill out the certificate application form that can be obtained from the Tech & Health Division Office and submit it to the Admissions and Records Office.
  • If a class is full and I want to add the class, what do I do?
    Students wishing to add a full class may list their name on the waitlist for the course, attend the first day of class and ask the instructor if they have room for you to add.
  • If I want to complain about a teacher, what do I do?
    Contact the Department Chair of that instructor and arrange a meeting.
