Chelsea Adelman (2017)

When I came to Mt. San Antonio College I declared a Sign Language Interpreting major. However, upon taking the Introduction to Astronomy course, as a fulfillment for the science requirement, I ended up really enjoying Astronomy. Following discussions with my professor and counselor, I decided to change my major to Astrophysics. This decision has led to some of the most fulfilling events of my life to date. Among them was the opportunity to take a special projects class in Astronomy. This allowed me to see what it felt like to do research, as an Astronomy Lab assistant. I was also able to help explain concepts to students that had questions during lab. Before coming to Mt. SAC, school was far from a priority and getting an associate’s degree seemed like a stressful feat. Since changing my major, opportunities I never thought possible have opened up to me, and my goals include earning a doctorate in Astrophysics. That intro Astronomy class hugely changed my life for the better. I could not be more excited for my future education and career opportunities ahead of me.
