Alternative Pathways to SPOT

Acceptable External Trainings

Faculty can meet Mt. SAC’s SPOT requirement by completing/earning any one of the following external training certifications/badges: 

Before deciding to complete one of these courses/certifications in lieu of SPOT, ensure that the course is being offered, that there are seats available, and that it will finish in time for you to be scheduled to teach online in your department.  Check with your department and division for this date.  We recommend that you register for these courses/certifications using your Mt. SAC email address.

Once you’ve earned one of the above badges or certificates, complete a Smartsheet application, including your Mt. SAC email address and A number (employee number from your portal), and providing evidence of completion:

  • Link to electronic badge (must include your name or Mt. SAC email address), or
  • Upload certificate of completion (must include your name or Mt. SAC email address), or
  • Link to website documenting your CVC quality-reviewed badge or certification.

Once we validate your badge/certification we will add you to the SPOT-certified faculty list.  Please allow five days for this process.  We do not accept college versions of @ONE training. However, if you have earned certification from another college you may qualify for SPEQ (SPOT Equivalency).  Please contact Catherine McKee (cmckee@mtsac.edu) with your questions about SPOT, XSPOT, or SPEQ.

SPOT Equivalency (SPEQ)

Faculty can earn Mt. SAC SPOT Equivalency (SPEQ) by meeting both of the following requirements.

  1. The faculty member received online training from a training program approved by the Distance Learning Committee, and
  2. The faculty member submits a course shell for an expedited review by a Mt. SAC SPOT reviewer, who verifies that key criteria for distance learning at Mt. SAC are met.

      Why don't I see my college? With 144 community colleges in the CCCCO system, Mt. SAC is just beginning the process of training review.  Before being added to the approved list, the Distance Learning Committee (DLC) must evaluate training components.  This process was approved by the Academic Senate at its December 2, 2021 meeting.

      Complete the form below, making sure to include your Mt. SAC email address and A number, and providing evidence of completion:

        • Link to electronic badge, or
        • Upload certificate of completion, or
        • Link to college website listing certified faculty.

      Within a few days you’ll receive an invitation to your SPEQ course Canvas shell.

      Submit Certification for SPOT Equivalency (SPEQ) Review

    • 3Create your SPEQ course, self-check it, and submit your completed rubric
      • Copy the course you want reviewed into the SPEQ shell for review.
        • You will also receive an invitation to a sample SPEQ course which contains further explanation of the requirements. You can use it as a resource as you finalize your course for review.
      • Perform a self-check of your course.
          • Using the rubric provided in the SPEQ course, complete the rubric and checklist in detail, including specific locations for listed components. Make sure all requirements are met.
          • Run a UDOIT report and correct accessibility issues.
      • Submit your completed rubric by uploading it at the designated page in your SPEQ course, and email the Assistant Distance Learning Coordinator, Catherine McKee (cmckee@mtsac.edu), to inform her of your submission.  She will assign you a reviewer who will review your course and contact you with feedback.
Note: SPOT Equivalency will only be granted after the faculty member submits documentation of the certification, and the Canvas course passes the review.
