Apprenticeship Qualifications & Benefits


Mt. SAC Child Development & Education Department (CDE) collaborates with the Mt. SAC Child Development Center (CDC) to provide paid apprenticeships to prepare professional educators with the knowledge, competencies and skills necessary for successful work in the field of Early Education and Care.  The CDE Department provides a formal educational pathway (course work) paired with paid on-the-job training at the Mt. SAC Child Development Center for students who are working towards completing Child Development certificates, permits, and degrees.

Application

    • Assistant Teacher – Pre-Apprenticeship

      To qualify as a “Participant”, you must have:

      • An interest in Child Development
      • Completed or be currently enrolled in 2 or more core Mt. SAC Child Development classes (CHLD 1, CHLD 5, CHLD 6, or CHLD 11)
      • Current employment at the Mt. SAC CDC as a student worker

      Qualifying “Participants” receive:

      • Access to a coach specialized in child development
      • Help with child development permit applications
      • Access to scholarships & financial assistance
      • Child development workshops
    • Jr. Associate Teacher – Pre-Apprenticeship

      To qualify as a “Jr. Associate”, you must have:

      • Declared Child Development or Education as a major
      • Completed 3 core Child Development classes with a “C” or better:  (CHLD 1, CHLD 5, CHLD 6, or CHLD 11)
      • Current enrollment in 6 or more Mt. SAC CD or GE units leading towards the completion of CD certificate, permit, degree or transfer
      • An overall GPA of 2.0 or higher
      • Current employment at the Mt. SAC CDC Center as a Jr. Associate Teacher

      Qualifying “Jr. Associates” receive:

      • Direct access to a coach specialized in child development
      • Weekly one-on-one coaching and support from a CDC Specialist
      • Help with child development permit applications
      • Access to workshops on current topics and trends in the field of Child Development
      • $400 stipend issued after completion of Fall & Spring semesters. (Must complete at least 6 units of Child Development or GE courses per semester with the grade of a C or better)
    • Associate Teacher - Apprenticeship

      To qualify as an “Associate”, you must have:

      • Declared Child Development or Education as a major
      • Completed 4 core Child Development classes with a “C” or better: (CHLD 1, CHLD 5, CHLD 6, CHLD 11)
      • Current enrollment in 6 or more Mt. SAC CD or GE units leading towards the completion of CD certificate, permit, degree or transfer (or completed AS or AS-T)
      • An overall GPA of 2.0 or higher
      • Current employment at the Mt. SAC Child Development Center as an Associate Teacher

      Qualifying “Associates” receive:

      • Direct access to a coach specialized in Child Development
      • Weekly one-on-one coaching and support from a CDC Specialist
      • Help with child development permit applications
      • Access to workshops and professional trainings on current topics and trends in the field of Child Development
      • Job interview training for individuals seeking employment in Early Childhood program in school districts and Head Starts.
      • $400 stipend issued after completion of Fall & Spring semesters. (Must complete at least 6 units of Child Development or GE courses per semester with the grade of a C or better)
