CCC to HBCU Transfer Guarantee

HBCUs were established primarily to serve the higher education needs of the Black community. However, they are open to students of all ethnicities. Most HBCUs are located in the South and on the East Coast. They award bachelor’s degrees in many fields and many award master's and doctorate degrees. Students who receive at least a 2.0 GPA (higher for some partner institutions) and 30 transferable units are guaranteed transfer to a HBCU as part of the California Community Colleges partnership with more than 25 select HBCUs.

The CCC to HBCU Transfer Guarantee provides California Community College students with a clear and supportive pathway to continue their educational journey at participating Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Through this initiative, students can receive guaranteed admission opportunities, personalized transfer guidance, and access to institutions that are deeply rooted in academic excellence, cultural affirmation, and student success. The program simplifies the transfer process and reduces the need for students to take unnecessary courses, which shortens the time it takes to get a degree and saves money along the way.

Eligibility Requirements

Any California community college student with a GPA or 2.0 or higher (NOTE: certain partner HBCUs will require a higher GPA) is guaranteed admission to all partner HBCU institutions using either of the following two options while at a California Community College:

Complete an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) using the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) or the California State University General Education Breadth pattern or
Complete a minimum of 30 UC or CSU units

Those students completing an Associate degree (non-ADT) are welcomed to apply to all partner institutions, however; the benefit of guaranteed admissions is not offered and all degree applicable units are subject to transcript evaluation.

- 1Step 1: Research Over 25+ Partner HBCUs
  Begin researching HBCU partner institutions. Popular HBCUs include:
  - Alabama State University
  - Dillard University
  - Grambling State University
  - Jackson State University
  - Morehouse College
  - Southern University and A&M College
  - Texas Southern University
- 2Step 2: Meet with an Academic Counselor to Confirm Your Eligibility
  
  Meet with an academic counselor to explore HBCU options, discuss majors, review transcripts, and confirm program eligibility. Your counselor will also provide a fee waiver code to complete the Common Black College Application.
- 3Step 3: Apply for the $5,000 Cal-HBCU Grant
  Receive up to $5,000 with the Cal-HBCU Transfer Grant to help make your transition smoother and more affordable. Eligible students must meet the following criteria to qualify for the Cal-HBCU Transfer Grant:
  Be a California community college student who has earned an Associate’s Degree for Transfer (ADT).
  
  Enroll (or plan to enroll) at an eligible HBCU.
  
  Demonstrate unmet financial need.
  
  Intend to return to California after graduating from the Partnered HBCU.

San Antonio College is a culturally responsive learning community and statewide academic support program designed to enhance the cultural and educational experiences of students of the African Diaspora.
