Class Order & Eligibility
Writing
Students may be placed into all writing classes at Mt. SAC via the Assessment of Written English Placement Test.
The Assessment of Written English (AWE) is a placement test that asks you to give an example of your best writing. The AWE is required for placement in English and American Language classes. The AWE measures your writing abilities in order to place you in a writing course where you will be successful. At least two professors evaluate your paper using these four categories:
- Organization: The logical arrangement of ideas.
- Development: Sufficient support for your ideas.
- Language: Use of vocabulary, grammar and punctuation.
- Reasoning and Ideas: Logical response to the topic.
Course Placement
You will receive a “test code” indicating eligibility for a specific English writing course level. There are six possible English placement levels:

LERN 81: Improving Writing | Credit course offered through the Academic Support and Achievement Center. |
ENGL 67: Writing Fundamentals * | Credit course offered through the English Department. |
ENGL 90: Accelerated Developmental Writing * | Credit course offered through the English Department. |
ENGL 68: Preparation for College Writing ** | Credit course offered through the English Department. Placement at this level provides for enrollment in most degree applicable and transfer level courses that have an English prerequisite. |
ENGL 1A: Freshman Composition | Credit course offered through the English Department. Meets AS, AA and part of the transfer requirement in English Composition. |
If you placed in ESL, AMLA, LERN 81, or ENGL 67, you will be limited to enrolling in courses that do not have a prerequisite of ENGL 68 eligibility or higher.
** Students eligible for ENGL 68 have two options: A) Enroll in ENGL 68; or B) Concurrently (at the same time) enroll in both ENGL 1A and ENGL 66 - Paragraph Writing.

Reading
Degrees of Reading Power (DRP) is an assessment test that evaluates reading comprehension.
The DRP measures reading skills for students whose primary language is English.

If English is not your primary language, the Degrees of Reading Power may not be appropriate to assess your reading skills. You are advised to take a reading course that corresponds to your AMLA writing placement.

Speaking and Grammar
There are no assessment tests for enrollment in AMLA speaking and one-unit grammar classes, and any Mt. SAC student who is registered for credit classes may take them.
However, due to the level of course content, students wishing to enroll in AMLA 24 (Idiomatic English) are advised to be eligible for AMLA 42 (Intermediate Writing), and students wishing to enroll in AMLA 23 (Formal Speaking) are advised to be eligible for AMLA 43 (Advanced Writing).
