Open That Door:
Bringing Experiential Learning Into Your Teaching Practice
Experiential learning is pedagogically powerful. Recognized as difference-makers for students, these out-of-the-classroom activities deepen learning by connecting students to the broader world. Experiential learning has also been called the “hidden curriculum” – a learning mode primarily available to more well-off, elite, and well-connected students, furthering the chronic achievement gap.
This all-day Friday on-campus interactive seminar (includes lunch) will introduce experiential learning from a community college perspective, using videos, lecture, short activities, and discussion about Marco’s experiences, the College of DuPage program, the experiential learning theory base, and issues that can arise in experiential education. Friday participants will also experience a short “field” experience on campus followed by work in faculty groups and teams to open up their own curriculum and explore ideas for experiential learning activities.
*The OPTIONAL add-on Saturday session will involve a hiking trip and travel to local hiking area so participants experience a full day’s field experience. Participants must attend the Friday session to participate in this activity. Ability to hike outdoors on easy-to-moderate difficulty trails with uneven terrain for up to 5 miles is required for Saturday participants.
