More than 600 local high school juniors will visit campus and explore opportunities offered by Mt. SAC during High School Juniors Day, Friday and Monday, Nov. 2 and 5.

Students will engage with different programs on campus through guided tours led by more than 40 Mt. SAC students and program demonstrations highlighting Career Education and other educational options including transfers to four-year college and Associate’s degrees. They also will learn about options available to pay for college including scholarships, grants and loans.

“The main goal of the event is to plant the seed of higher education, in particular the benefits of attending a community college,” said Tannia Robles, Director of High School Outreach, which coordinates the annual event.

The High School Outreach Department has hosted a High School Seniors Day for many years.  Three years ago, the department decided to target high school juniors, who typically start making college-going decisions before their senior year.

“The earlier they are exposed to the community college being a viable and good option for them, the smoother their transition to college will be,” Robles said. “We want high school students to hope, to dream, to envision themselves as college students. All students are college material regardless of their academic and personal past and present.”

In an effort to include as many high schools as possible, the college pays all transportation costs for the students.

Tarik Ross Jr., student services outreach specialist, said that for many high school juniors, this is their first exposure to a college campus.

“We want to help them see and feel what the college culture is and especially how Mt. SAC fits into their big picture as far as what their goals might be,” Ross said.
