Mt. SAC’s Natural Sciences Division will be playing host to its Family Science Festival on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This free community event for curious scientists of all ages will feature Mt. SAC science students leading hands-on activities, demonstrations, games, and crafts. Some of the scheduled fun includes bottle rockets, bubble mania, magic sand, and face painting.

A young science student is surrounded by a bubble ring. The STEM Center will be having a science trivia game show, and contestants can win prizes. Visitors also can take walking tours of the Exploratorium – Mt. SAC’s science museum – and the B.J. Meek Collection, a room displaying taxidermy animals to study for scholarly purposes.

"Guests will be able to interreact with and ask questions to our science faculty," said Jenny Leung, professor of chemistry and STEM Center faculty liaison. "Toward the end of the event, we will have a guided walking tour of the Wildlife Sanctuary where guests can see and learn about local plants, animals, and their habitats. There’s a bit of walking involved in this tour so guests should come in comfortable walking shoes."

Four out-of-this-world shows also will be screened at the Randall Planetarium.

The event will be held on campus by the Building 4 walkway and the Science Quad Area. Free parking will be available in Lots B and D until 2 p.m.

"We want to invite the community to partner with us to keep this event free and on going for many years," Leung said. "Donations can be made to the Family Science Festival via the Mt. SAC Foundation."
