NUANCE Peer Mentoring

 

Role of a Peer Mentor:

  • Meet the student on a regular basis (twice a week) and to assist them in reviewing their homework and practicing role plays. Meet once a week for transitional students.
  • Provide guidance and encouragement to the student in the development and use of effective study skills, including organization skills, managing deadlines, breaking down tasks into component parts and prioritizing tasks.
  • Provide advocacy and liaison support, where appropriate.
  • Assist the student in identifying and accessing Mt. SAC facilities and services (e.g. ACCESS, Career & Transfer Center, labs, Library)and accompanying them to use these services where appropriate.
  • Support the student in accessing leisure facilities on campus, like Student Life and clubs.
  • Encourage and support the student in making the most of services available and increase independence.
 

Peer Mentor Eligibility

  • GPA of 3.0 or better, Honor's preferred
  • Availability on Fridays 9:30am-12:30pm
  • Age matched peer mentors
  • Most mentors are enrolled in 12-15 units
  • Be available to attend events on campus with NUANCE or mentees
  • Committment to be a peer mentor for one full semster (16 weeks), moving a mentee to another mentor is disruptive to the student meeting their goals
  • Attend office hours, counseling appointments, OT or Behavioral appointments (request to attend for appointments outside of ACCESS)
  • Intend to remain in NUANCE as a peer mentor for more than one semester
  • Set clear boundaries for other jobs regarding the schedule for NUANCE, case management and peer mentoring times
 

Peer Mentor Responsibilities

  • Meet the student at agreed times and locations; avoid running late or canceling sessions.
  • Advise the student by email/text of any unavoidable changes to arrangements at least 24 hours in advance.
  • Attend regular meetings and training, as required by NUANCE.
  • Use peer mentor sessions as an opportunity to do NUANCE homework (quiz). Use good role plays only.
  • Communicate with the student in clear and specific terms, providing written instruction (email) as a back up where appropriate.

  • Clearly document each session with student mentee and submit to the NUANCE instructors weekly.
  • Communicate with your supervisors regarding challenging behaviors or situations.
  • Accurately complete time sheet and mentee documentation, ON TIME.
 

Student Responsibilities

  • Advise your mentor by email or text of any unavoidable changes to arrangements at least 24 hours in advance.
  • Attend review meetings with the ACCESS counselor or NUANCE Instructor when requested.
  • Communicate any concerns or difficulties in working with your mentor to your ACCESS Counselor.
