Mt. SAC Launches a Children’s Choir

Mt. SAC will be forming a children's choir in September 2019

August 14, 2019 - 04:55 PM

Mt. SAC is forming its first ever Children’s Choir for youths grades one to 10 under the direction of the college’s Choral Director Bruce Rogers.

“This has been a dream of mine for over 20 years,” said Rogers. “With most elementary schools, and even some middle schools, having no choral programs in the region, there is a real need to give kids with an interest in singing such experience and instruction.”

There will be three choirs: the Dolce Choir is for first to third graders and requires no audition, the Cantabile Singers is third to sixth graders (audition required), and the Mt. SAC Youth Chorale for seventh to 10th graders (audition required).

“The goal is not to replace their school choral program, but to enhance it,” explained Rogers, who also hopes to attract home-schooled students, who may not have choral instruction. “This will be like an honor choir, giving students the chance to sing with kids from San Bernardino, L.A. and Orange counties.”

Instructors will teach everything from vocal warm-ups and development of coordination through movement, to singing in multiple languages and solos, depending on the level.

“We go deep into building skills and music theory at the upper levels,” Rogers said. “For the elementary- aged students, we may be their first choral instruction, so we start with the basics.”

The choirs will sing in numerous styles including folk, popular, musicals, patriotic, classical, multi-cultural, gospel, spirituals and jazz. All classes meet at Mt. SAC’s Performing Arts Center.

The Fall semester is 15 weeks, while Spring is 19 weeks. Tuition is dependent on the level and length of the semester. Yearly tuition offers a discount.

Registration for the Fall class is open now. Auditions for third through 10th grades will be held Aug. 20, 24 and 31. Visit http://www.msaccc.com/ for more information and to register.
