Event Spotlights Celebrity Activist

Nyle DiMarco

April 18, 2019 - 02:44 PM

Nyle DiMarco, winner of America’s Next Top Model and Dancing with the Stars and activist for the deaf community, will be speaking Thursday, April 25, at Mt. SAC as part of the college’s Student Equity Speaker Series.

Born into a multigenerational deaf family DiMarco believes that his deafness is “an asset rather than a limitation.”  Through his experiences, DiMarco’s audiences gain a deeper understanding of the deaf community. Even though he is a tireless advocate for the deaf community, Di Marco encourages all people to live their lives authentically and to define their own versions of success. DiMarco’s message is simple: you can accomplish anything no matter the obstacles as long as you believe in yourself.

DiMarco founded the Nyle DiMarco Foundation, which works to improve the lives of deaf people around the world. He produced the 2018 return to Broadway of “Children of a Lesser God” and was a creative collaborator on The ASL App, created by native deaf signers to teach conversational American Sign Language.

The presentation, which begins at 3 p.m. in Building 13, Room 1700, is open to the entire campus community.

The Student Equity Speaker Series, which began in 2017, brings diverse motivational speakers to campus to talk about emerging issues in society and personal issues of struggle.

Previous speakers have included: Lalo Alcaraz, cartoonist and political activist; Oz Sanchez, Marine veteran and U.S. Paralympian; Sonia Nazario, author of “Enrique’s Journey,” and most recently, Dario Guerrero, director of “Rocio” the documentary.
