Mt. San Antonio College will raise awareness about student hunger and nutritional deficiencies during its annual “Mountie Fresh Day” on Tuesday, April 16, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Kerr’s Corner lawn area between the library and Mountie Café.

“Mountie Fresh Day promotes not only CalFresh, but also healthy eating and healthy living,” said Koji Uesugi, dean of Student Services and co-chair of the Homelessness and Basic Resources Committee, which sponsors this event. CalFresh application assistance, healthy eating and cooking demonstrations, food tastings, wellness resources, and giveaways will all be part of the event.

The event will promote and encourage qualified students to sign up for CalFresh, the California branding of the federally-funded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that provides up to $192 a month to help people obtain nutritious food.

"CalFresh benefits provides free money for food for eligible college students experiencing food insecurity.  Mountie Fresh Day is one of our outreach efforts to promote a better understanding of this valuable program for Mt. SAC’s students,” Uesugi said. “When students are hungry, that affects their ability to be successful in college.”

In general, students can be eligible for CalFresh benefits if they receive Cal Grant A or B, have been awarded work-study, work an average of 20 hours per week or 80 hours a month, participate in a special program like EOPS or foster youth program, or have a child. Students can learn more about CalFresh and receive assistance with the application by emailing calfresh@mtsac.edu or following us on Facebook.com/mtsacCFO
