“Puttin' on the Hits” to break barriers

Deaf students performing

March 22, 2019 - 01:37 PM

Deaf and hard of hearing students will be performing a very special show at the 21st Annual “Puttin' on the Hits” fundraiser tonight.

Every year the Faculty Association hosts the fundraiser to raise money for student financial awards, by bringing together students, staff and faculty to share a stage for a night filled with live performances and laughter.

This year, DHHS students will be appearing in two numbers:  An interpretation of “Another Brick on the Wall “by Pink Floyd and “We Are the Champions"  by Queen. The songs chosen have an important meaning to the students, as they get an opportunity to showcase talent in a different way.

“I wasn’t sure how a group of students who couldn't hear music would be able to perform. None of the students can hear sounds, speak, or sing, however they can feel vibrations from the floor.” said Rondell Schroder, the show's director. “These students showed me that music can transcend sound and be so much more.”

The cast will be helping out the students by stomping the beats on stage and there will be interpreters on stage during the performance.

During the “We are the Champions” number, DHHS cast will be dressed up as members of  Queen, including three students dressed as Freddie Mercury lip-synching and two interpreting the song in sign language. “We have never had anything like this, I believe it will be one of the most memorable performances,” Schroeder said. “I am so happy that they are able to share their message in this year’s show.”

The show starts at 7:30 pm at the Sophia B. Clarke Theater. Tickets are $20 General admission and $15 for students with I.D.  Tickets can be purchased online at the Mt. SAC Box Office website.
