Journalism Students Scoop Up Awards

Mt. SAC students won big at a major collegiate journalism competition held in La Jolla on March 2.

Students from community colleges and universities participated at this year’s Associated Collegiate Press National Convention and College Media Association Awards Banquet.

The journalism program at Mt. SAC won first place for Best News Website for SAC.Media from CCMA and two Best of Show awards for Best College News Website and Best College Magazine Website from ACP.

Numerous students won individual awards, including first place wins to Adam Valenzuela for Best Online Advertisement, Joseph Harvey for Best Feature Story, Alinna Boonklun for Best Photo Illustration, Brigette Lugo for Best News Headline Portfolio, and Pablo Unzueta for Best News Photo Series. In addition students took five second-place awards, and four third-place awards.

Mt. SAC and Cal Baptist University students were asked to serve on a panel titled “Attention Latinx Journalist, Your Audience Needs You” moderated by Toni Albertson, a professor and student media advisor at Mt. SAC. 

Students Abraham Navarro and Destiny Anderson served on “Covering our Racist Past” panel, moderated by Professor Linda Putney from Kansas State University with students from Kansas State and Ball State University.
