Journalism Students Win Big at JACC

Mt. SAC journalism students won 30 awards including 12 first-place awards, two second-place honors, and eight third-place awards at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) competition held Sept. 29 at Cal State Fullerton.

The students’ Substance Magazine won the general excellence and best magazine design awards.

First-place awards for best enterprise story went to Ferry Baylon, Guilermo Soza, Lauren Scheer, Cory Jaynes, and Joseph Harvery. First-place awards for best webcast/broadcast were won by Dalia Quiroz, Brigette Lugo, and Kevin Suarez. First-place awards for best video journalism went to Lugo and Doug DeWet. Best magazine opinion story award went to Albert Serna, and first-place award for magazine photo essay went to Pablo Unzueta.

Second-place awards were won by Brigette Lugo, best opinion writing, and Brett Hernandez, best news photo.

Third-place awards went to Angelica Cruz, best column and best copyediting; Sheen Lee, best sports game story; John Zarate, best photo illustration; Savannah Munoz, best magazine opinion story; Substance Magazine, best magazine website design; Pablo Unzueta, best magazine photo; and Adam Valenzuela, best editorial cartoon.
