New Mascot Debuts at Mt. SAC

Mt. San Antonio College officially launched a new era by welcoming a fresh face as its mascot: Rizzly the Grizzly. A series of launch events are planned across campus from Sept. 10 to 14. The community is invited to join in the fun, meet Rizzly the Grizzly and pick up free merchandise while supplies are available.

Grizzly college spirit mark “This has been a thoughtful and collaborative process, involving years of consideration and feedback from students, faculty, staff, and alumni,” said Uyen Mai, Director of Marketing and Communication and chair of the Mascot Development Committee. “Over four surveys, we received more than 12,000 responses. We read and considered them all. 

“The grizzly bear was chosen to reflect the values and energy of our campus. It brings to life our shared ideals of strength, intelligence, and determination. Our costumed mascot, Rizzly the Grizzly, is the embodiment of that confidence and zest for life.” 

Rizzly the Grizzly replaces Joe Mountie, which was an updated version of the 1940s Little Joe. Joe was Grizzly athletics spirit markupdated to reflect the evolving campus, be more inclusive and represent the campus as a whole. Because of this, Mt. SAC launched a Mascot Evaluation Task Force and Mascot , a years-long evaluation process not long after celebrating the college’s 75th anniversary, and the grizzly bear emerged as the viable replacement.

In addition to the new mascot, Mt. SAC released a collection of new mascot logos, spirit marks, supplemental graphics, and more. The new mascot and graphics can be viewed and downloaded online on the Marketing and Communication website. 

Those curious about future bear sightings can meet Rizzly the Grizzly, snap photos, and score some swag at these upcoming events:

  • Rizzly the Grizzly mascot 🎉The Mascot Booth at Join-A-Club on Sept. 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Miracle Mile, north of the Student Center. Rizzly will debut at 12 p.m. with members of the cheer team.
  • 📸 The lead up to the Board of Trustees Meeting on Sept. 11 from 5-6:30 p.m. on the front patio of Founders Hall. Rizzly will appear at 6 p.m.
  • 🎉The Mascot Booth at Join-A-Club on Sept. 12 from 5-7 p.m. at the Miracle Mile, north of the Student Center. Rizzly visits at 5:30 p.m. with members of the cheer team.
  • 🏈A football game at Hilmer Lodge Stadium on Sept. 14 from 5-6 p.m. Rizzly touches down at 5:45 p.m.

The Mascot Evaluation Task Force also researched the moniker, Mounties. After research, evaluation and discussion, the committee decided to keep the moniker. What changes is HOW the moniker is depicted. Instead of a mountain man, it will now be a native grizzly bear.
