Adjunct Professor Galvan in Running for America's Favorite Teacher

April 28, 2026 - 02:46 PM
Mt. SAC adjunct chemistry professor Shaun Galvan has been selected as a quarterfinalist in the 2026 America’s Favorite Teacher competition.
The national competition highlights impactful educators, with public voting determining advancement through each round.
“Being voted into this competition has been both humbling and energizing. It really reflects the relationships I’ve built with my students and the learning environment we’ve created together,” says Galvan, who has been an instructor at Mt. SAC for five years. “I was nominated through the competition’s open nomination process, and it’s been incredibly meaningful to see students, colleagues, and my community continue to support me through each round.”
Galvan is currently competing in the quarterfinal round of online voting, which is open from April 27–May 7, and must place No. 1 in his group to advance. He hopes his connections with his students can help propel him to the top of this voting round.
“I think what resonates most with my students is that I focus on making chemistry approachable, relevant, hands-on, and engaging. I try to connect concepts to real-world applications, bring energy into the classroom, and create a space where students feel comfortable asking questions and taking risks in their learning,” he says. “I also emphasize consistency and support — whether that’s through clear instruction, structured resources, or just being available when students need help.
“Ultimately, I want students to leave my class not just understanding chemistry but also feeling more confident in their ability to learn challenging material.”
Students and supporters of Galvan can cast one free vote online every 24 hours, and additional optional donation-based votes support the national charity Planetary Society.
