Ernesto Fuentes (2017)

Ernesto Fuentes is a Mexican-American and U.S. Navy veteran. After his enlistment in the military he studied photojournalism at Mt. SAC. But a Sierra Club sponsored photography trip to Owen’s Valley exposed him to the consequences of the mismanagement of natural resources by government and private enterprise. He photographed and wrote extensively on water environmental issues in California. Ernesto has since changed his major to conservation biology and natural resource management. He hopes to one day manage conservation efforts in the national parks system and to open his own nature photography gallery. Ernesto is extremely grateful for the board’s consideration and award. He looks forward to working diligently all spring and summer to ensure that the effects of fertilizers on the water systems of the Salton Sea are better understood.
