ARTC 160  Typography

Prerequisite: ARTC 100
Corequisite: ARTD 20 (may have been taken previously)


Design and use of basic letterforms, type families, characteristics, history, and principles of typography in graphic design. Traditional and digital skills for the art of typeface design, typographic layout, expressive typography, and conceptual thinking.

      - Creating original characters and type styles using traditional (hand) lettering techniques
      - Creating original characters and type styles using digital tools and techniques
      - Creating original typography-based logos, logotypes, and corporate identities
      - Creating original typographic solutions for printed products such as book covers, magazine covers, posters, and t-shirt designs
      - Creating original typographic solutions for web pages
    • Course Measurable Objectives
      Provide a minimum of five (5) course measurable objectives:
      1. Design and produce original characters and type styles using traditional techniques.
      2. Design and produce original characters and type styles using digital techniques.
      3. Design and produce effective, typography-based logos, logotypes, and corporate identities.
      4. Design and produce effective, typography-based print advertisements.
      5. Critique typography-based commercial art using learned skills and concepts.
      6. Present original type style designs, explaining and defending the successful usage of learned skills and concepts.
