My name is Lani Ruh, and I am excited and honored to be running for the Senator-at-Large position. Currently, I serve as a Senator At Large in Academic Senate, the co-chair of the Academic Senate Awards Committee, a faculty representative on SPEAC, a member of the CBE (Competency-based Education) Pilot Program work group as expert faculty, a member of the FA Awards Committee, a faculty member of the Mt. SAC Scholarship Committee, and am a full-time Kinesiology faculty member. I am also the assistant coach for men’s and women’s swimming and water polo (four sports).
My career at Mt. SAC started in 2007 as an adjunct faculty member. Before that, I was a Mt. SAC student-athlete and part of the first women’s water polo team. In reality, I have been part of the Mt. SAC family since 1994 in various capacities, which has allowed me to work with several different departments on campus. From Admissions to Academic Counseling to all academic disciplines, I have met so many faculty and students. It’s been such a pleasure. I have been SPOT certified since 2018 and was able to mentor in the spring, which gave me even more chances to meet colleagues and help them any way I could.
My main goal is to do my best to share my knowledge with students. I am passionate about student success, and I am continually working to become a better instructor so that I can assist and encourage them to further their educational and performance goals. I completed a course in Equity and Culturally Responsive Teaching, and I am currently in an ACUE cohort in Effective Teaching Practices to become an even more effective instructor for students from all backgrounds and learning styles. I also am involved in the TILT (Transparency in Learning and Teaching) Research Project and completed the “Creating Dynamic Lectures” course. I have also been chosen to be a part of the first cohort of the pilot program: Being a Data Literate Educator. I teach both theory and activity courses, and enjoy all platforms for learning. I also enjoy collaborating and learning from all other areas around campus. The more I work with students and faculty, the more effective I can be a purveyor of opportunity. I always work to put students first.
As a Senator-at-Large, you will get the same dedication and hard work I have brought to the classroom and athletics. We have such an amazing staff and campus that when I am out recruiting student-athletes to come to our school, I almost have too much to say! Thank you, and I look forward to working with each of you.
