Student Learning Outcomes (SLO)


Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) are measurements of what Mt. SAC students learn and feel as a result of taking a course. By measuring SLOs at regular intervals, departments can ensure that students are gaining the knowledge and skills they need in order to succeed in  their next classes and academic career. The following are some of the SLOs assessed by the AMLA Department.

Writing

AMLA 41, 42 and 43:

  • 75% of students will meet or exceed the standard for development of ideas in a body of appropriate length writing (as evaluated by a faculty-developed rubric).
  • 75% of students will meet or exceed the standard for organization of ideas in a body of appropriate length writing (as evaluated by a faculty-developed rubric).

Reading

AMLA 31, 32, and 33:

  • 70% of students will comprehend the central meaning and/or details of a text of level appropriate length and difficulty 75% of the time.
  • 70% of students will demonstrate acquisition of new vocabulary in a course-embedded test of either a combination of passive (no more than 50% of the words) and active masteries or active mastery alone by obtaining a score of 75% or better.

Speaking

AMLA 21:

  • 70% of students of the students will be able to state that they are aware of their pronunciation strengths when they speak English.
  • 70% of students of the students will be able to state that they are aware of their pronunciation weaknesses when they speak English.

AMLA 22:

  • 75% of the students when asked to rate their confidence in their ability to converse in English (for example talking in a group setting, asking questions in class, starting a conversation) will indicate a rating of 4 or 5 on a scale of 1-5.
  • 75% of the students will score 75% or better on a thirty-question True-False test which measures the ability to recognize correct grammar and usage of language functions. 

AMLA 23:

  • 75% of the students will rate their confidence in presenting an organized academic speech with a 4 or greater on a scale of 1-5.
  • 75% of students will score 75% or better on a listening/note-taking assignment on the main ideas of an academic lecture

AMLA 24:

  • 75% of the students when asked to rate their confidence in their ability to use idioms when speaking in English will indicate a rating of 4 or 5 on a scale of 1-5 (pre/post test).
  • 75% of the students will score 75% or better on a thirty-five question test which measures the ability to recognize correct usage of a set of thirty-five common English idioms

Grammar

AMLA 56:

  • 70% of the students will be able to supply the appropriate definite article in a cloze test.
  • 70% of the students will be able to supply the appropriate indefinite article in a cloze test.

AMLA 57:

  • 70% of the students will be able to supply the appropriate present tense or present progressive tense verb in a cloze test.
  • 70% of the students will be able to supply the appropriate present perfect or present perfect progressive verb in a cloze test.

AMLA 58:

  • 70% of the students will be able to supply the appropriate modal auxiliary.
  • 70% of the students will be able to supply the appropriate perfect modal auxiliary.

AMLA 59:

  • 70% of the students will be able to supply the appropriate preposition of time.
  • 70% of the students will be able to supply the appropriate preposition of place.

AMLA 60:

  • 70% of the students will be able to choose the appropriate gerund form in a cloze test.
  • 70% of the students will be able to choose the appropriate infinitive form in a cloze test.

AMLA 61:

  • 70% of the students will be able to choose the appropriate noun form in a cloze test.
  • 70% of the students will be able to choose the appropriate verb form in a cloze test.
