What is the MESA Program?
MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) is a state-funded, academic support program for committed STEM students. We provide academic resources, mentoring, community, and professional development to help students succeed in their coursework, transfer, and earn STEM degrees.

What makes MESA different from other student support programs?
MESA focuses on building both skills and mindset. Beyond tutoring and study space, we emphasize goal setting, discipline, ownership of learning, and community, helping students develop habits that lead to long-term success in STEM.

Who is eligible to apply?

Declare a calculus-based math, science, or engineering major (see list of eligible majors here).
Minimum 2.4 overall GPA (not applicable to new Mt. SAC students).
Enroll in at least 6 units at Mt. SAC each Fall/Spring semester & at least 1 class per semester is a STEM class.
Plan to transfer to a four-year institution (must not already have a bachelor's degree).
Be a first-generation college student (i.e. neither of your parents have bachelor's degree from any country).
Receive financial aid (e.g. you receive a Pell grant, CA Promise grant, Cal grant, Federal Work Study, Cal Fresh, CA Dream Act, GI Bill, OR you are an EOPS/CARE/CalWorks participant, OR you are a TRIO participant, OR you or your guardian is a TANF/welfare recipient.)
Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or AB 540/DACA student. Unfortunately, International/F1 Visa students are not eligible.

Is the application competitive?
Yes — space is limited. We currently select students on a first-come, first-serve basis as long as they meet eligibility requirements.

When can I apply?
Applications are usually open in late Spring for Fall semester and Winter for Spring semester. Exact application opening dates will be posted on our website and social media.

How do I apply?
Students can apply by completing the online application form linked on our website.

Is there a cost to participate?
No. MESA and all MESA activities, including field trips, are free to MESA students.

How long can I stay in MESA? Do I need to reapply each semester?
Students remain in the program as long as they meet eligibility and participation requirements. Students do not need to reapply once they are in the program.

What are the requirements to stay active in MESA?
Beyond maintaining eligibility listed above, students must complete semester/yearly requirements:

ACADEMIC – Each Fall/Spring Semester:

Submit a "Meet my Professor" form.

Submit a mid-semester Academic Progress Report.

Meet with the MESA counselor & have an updated MAP on file.

Complete 10 hours total of: studying, or tutoring at the MESA Center, and/or attending MESA academic activities.

CAREER – Each Academic Year:

Attend one MESA Career Activity of your choice.

Apply for at least 1 scholarship, internship, research, or professional development opportunity.

COMMUNITY – Each Academic Year:

Attend the MESA Fall kickoff.

Attend one MESA Community Activity of your choice.

How much time does MESA require each week?
While this varies, on average, students may spend 1-2 hours per week engaging with MESA.

What happens if I don’t meet the semester requirements?
Students who don’t meet requirements become inactive. We check in, provide guidance, and help students re-engage when possible. Students who are inactive for two semesters are dropped from the program.

What are the benefits of being in MESA?
MESA offers academic support (tutoring, academic workshops, textbook, calculator, and laptop loans), transfer support (counseling, transfer workshops, university field trips, transfer application reviews), career support (guest speakers, professional conferences, skills workshops, 3D printer access, paid research opportunities), and community building (study and lounge space, social events, leadership opportunities).

Do I get access to counseling or advising?
Yes. MESA students have access to specialized counseling and guidance focused on STEM pathways, transfer planning, and career exploration.

Is tutoring provided?
Yes. MESA provides students with STEM-specific tutors, resources, and encourages collaborative studying.

Are there scholarships or paid opportunities through MESA?
Each year, opportunities are available depending on funding and partnerships. Currently, MESA has paid summer research positions available specifically for our MESA students where they are paired with a lab and mentor at either UC Riverside or Cal Poly Pomona.

Do MESA students receive swag or recognition?
Yes! Active students receive MESA swag, certificates, and recognition for engagement and milestones. Transferring MESA students are provided with a graduation sash and certificate during our annual Transfer celebration.

What is the MESA learning culture like?
Our culture emphasizes growth, discipline, purpose, and ownership. Students are encouraged to set clear goals, commit to them, adopt a positive mindset, and take consistent action.

Will I feel out of place if I’m struggling academically?
Not at all. MESA is a place where students grow, not where they’re expected to be perfect. Many students join while still figuring things out.

Is MESA only about academics?
No. We also focus on professional development, leadership, confidence-building, and creating a strong sense of belonging.
