What motivated you to go to college? My motivation to attend college came from my family. I wanted to help provide for my family and I knew earning a college degree would open doors for me.
Describe your college experience as first-generation. My college experience was difficult. I was struggling with classes and did not know which path I wanted to take. I was also a transfer student; once I transferred I felt lost and unable to keep up with my class workload. It also felt as if I had to work twice as hard as my peers.
What unique challenges did you face? Imposter syndrome - I felt as if I did not belong in college. I questioned whether I was smart enough to be there.
How did you overcome those challenges? I met faculty that were willing to guide me. Some of my college professors were also the first in their families to attend college and listening to their stories inspired me. I also joined clubs and met students who could relate to my struggles. We formed our own community and continued to motivate each other.
What did you advise other first-generation students? Seek help! There are many free services on campus dedicated to serving students. Use your resources and reach out to your professors.
