Highlights of Years Past

  • Streaming Critical Consciousness Film Screenings

Streaming Critical Consciousness Series is a campus-wide event where we feature films or documentaries to elevate the voices, stories, experiences, and issues of our Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander (AANHPI) students' communities.

  • These film screenings always serve as a meaningful opportunity for me to step away from teaching and my usual chair routine, take a pause, and engage with something thought provoking and inspiring.

    L. McDaniel ETHS Dept. Chair & Prof.

I’m so deeply grateful and moved to have experienced the film Far East Deep South that I can’t put into words what’s stirring in my heart. Something magical and powerful happens when connections are made – so many levels.

AANAPISI Week

What is the purpose of AANAPISI Week?
It is a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions of these institutions and the crucial support they provide to AANHPI students, who often face unique challenges in accessing and succeeding in higher education.

What are AANAPISIs?
AANAPISIs are colleges and universities with undergraduate populations that are at least 10% Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander, with at least half of their degree-seeking students being low-income.

What kind of support do AANAPISIs offer?
AANAPISIs offer a range of culturally responsive services, including tutoring, advising, career development, counseling, and more, to create inclusive learning environments.

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

  • APAHM logo
  • Asian Pacific American Heritage Month was signed into public law on October 23, 1992. While the statute recognizes the earliest immigration of Japanese American settlers and the contributions of Chinese "pioneers" who helped to complete the transcontinental railroad, it is also to recognize the "history, concerns, contributions, and achievements of Asian American and Pacific Islanders".

APAHM centers the celebration of AANHPIs contributions, heritage, and lived experiences, including contemporary socio-historical-political issues in the U.S. It also shares recognition with Mental Health Awareness Month. Four events included a focus on "Cultivating Tools for Wellness", an inaugural speech storytelling contest, and two film screenings as part of a new Equity Center series, "Streaming Critical Consciousness" featuring Blue Bayou and Liquor Store Dreams.

SAC Media featured events:  APAHM Cultivating Tools of Wellness, APAHM Speech Storytelling Contest

Arise Leadership Training

Each year the Arise Program takes a group of students for a 3 day, 2 night overnight stay at a local University where students engage with Mt. SAC faculty, staff, & their peers on a journey of self-reflection, self-discovery, and self-empowerment. Through daily workshops that explore the various forms of cultural capital and team-building exercises, students leave with tangible skills to assist them in their academic, personal, and professional development. It is a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions of these institutions and the crucial support they provide to AANHPI students, who often face unique challenges in accessing and succeeding in higher education.
