STEM Scholars Program
Chemistry Department faculty; Dr. Iraj B. Nejad and Dr. Jenny S. Chen, have received
a new five-year $600,000 award from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The award
will provide 36 Academic Scholarships annually ranging from $2,400 to $2,800 each
and 10 summer Research Scholarships annually for $3000 each, to academically talented
but financially needy full-time students interested in obtaining an associate degree
in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) or transfer to a four-year
university to obtain higher education degrees in STEM disciplines. A student may receive
both the academic scholarship during the fall/spring semesters at Mt. SAC as well
as the research scholarship during the summer to participate in an 8-week undergraduate
research program at a neighboring four-year institution including UCLA, UC Irvine,
Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Los Angeles or the JPL.
Students who meet the program eligibility may receive the academic scholarship for
a second consecutive year. The students participating in the program will receive
an array of academic support including individual advising, tutoring and mentoring
by experienced STEM faculty at Mt. SAC to succeed in their education. Additional information
for the program can be obtained by clicking here.
