Schedule Clearance Test

To gain access to Yellow and Red Zone equipment, you must pass a supervised, unassisted proficiency test using the relevant equipment, administered by an appropriate member of MakerSpace staff.

We recommend asking staff and cleared members any questions you might have about our specific machines before attempting a test soas to learn any relevant specifics beyond familiarity with machines of those particular kinds.

Test Requirements and Expectations

    • Yellow Tests

To test for Yellow, you should be prepared to demonstrate proficiency with the drill press, bandsaw, belt sander, miter saw, planer, table router, and table saw.

You may alternatively attempt a one-day test on any single one of those machines, granting you clearance on that machine for the day. You will need to re-test if you want to use that machine again any other day.

There are separate tests, at cleared staff's discretion, for the CNC router and Juki industrial sewing machines.

    • Red Tests

To test for Red, you must already be cleared for all of Yellow, have spent 10+ hours at the MakerSpace, and have a project that requires the use of the appropriate Red equipment. You should then be prepared to demonstrate proficiency with the particular piece of equipment you are being tested on.

There is no "blanket" test for the entirety of Red; rather, each piece is tested and cleared separately.

If you possess relevant professional certification (such as welding certificates) or a signed letter vouching for your proficiency from an appropriate Mt. SAC faculty member, at our discretion the Yellow and time requirements may be partially or wholly waived, but you must still pass a proficiency test with a capable MakerSpace staffmember.

If you're ready, use the buttons below to use the buttons below to start the process by either emailing us, or if you're already a MakerSpace member, you can send one of our Techs a direct message on our Discord server:
