Title V Gives Final Impact Presentations

Of the nearly 100 presentations and training sessions given by Title V staff, both on and off campus since the grant kicked off in 2013, this was a bitter-sweet session.  About 25 campus community members attended the 3:oopm event which started with the Director, Lisa Rodriguez, giving acknowledgement to those leaders who conceived the grant and provided formative assistance early on: Dr. Meghan Chen, Dean of Library and Learning Assistance, Dr. Irene Malmgren, Retired VP of Instruction, Jim Jenkins, Retired Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, Dr. Audrey Yamagata Noji, VP of Student Services, and Tom Mauch, Associate VP of Student Services.  This was followed by a brief report by key personnel and a faculty coordinator, Tony Henry, who shared the accomplishments of the Child Development program under the grant. Each staff member spoke of the deepened commitment to student success, the tangible fruits of their work on the 20+ grant projects, and their gratitude for the relationships built or strengthened as a result of the tasks they always approached as a team.

Perhaps the highlight of the 90 minute presentation was the heartfelt and inspiring words of the Tutors in the Classroom who, while students at Mt. SAC, benefitted greatly from the Writing Center's TC program and went on to become TC's themselves. When asked by Interim VP of Instruction, Gregory Anderson what the one thing was that could improve Mt. SAC, one TC enthusiastically replied, "more TC's!" Question ensued and a vibrant student support conversation took place organically, with the Title V Director asking Counselor, Emily Versace, if perhaps a Training from the Back of the Room session would benefit the TC's in their important work with NNS and English composition students at Mt. SAC.

We sincerely hope another Title V comes to Mt. SAC and know that the institution will embrace the projects and people to continue the important work of the grant seed funds.
