Summer Science Exploration Experience (S2E2) Summer 2015

The S2E2 program is a three-week program devoted to delving into the real science of everyday life and the advances of modern science and technology. This is accomplished by using hands-on experiments, field trips and illustrations to demonstrate the application of science and understand today’s society. The S2E2 activities are designed by experienced faculty and staff with a hands-on approach aimed at expanding the horizons and experiences of middle school students within grades 7-9. The program includes topics ranging from astronomy to zoology, with associated explorations that provide learning opportunities using computers, the Mt. SAC Planetarium, analytical instruments, field study locations, and diagnostic chemical testing.

For the inaugural offering of the S2E2 in summer 2015, forty-six (46) middle school students that were selected by their teachers participated in the program.  The first cohort of Mt. SAC students enrolled in the STEM Teacher Preparation program worked as instructional aids alongside faculty to gain teaching experience. The program included three field outings to i) the San Andreas fault, ii) the American Gemological Institute in San Diego and (iii) the Natural Museum of History in Los Angeles. The following video shows highlights of the first S2E2 program. Enjoy watching!
