Planning for Our Future

Letter from the President

president Martha Garcia

As we enter another graduation season – my first as President and CEO of Mt. SAC – I want to thank you for your efforts to support our students. I am grateful for your commitment to our shared vision of providing excellent education, teaching and learning environments.

We recently conducted an external community survey to identify the public’s higher education priorities. The results, presented to the Board just last month, show the public values Mt. SAC providing an affordable education.

Working together, we can expand affordable opportunities for local students to earn college credits, certifications, job skills, or transfer to four-year universities to complete their degrees.

An essential part of this vision must include maintaining and upgrading your teaching and learning work environments so that our students can continue to receive the best of what we have to offer.

Please take a moment to see the community’s feedback and share your input today

I look forward to continuing this important conversation over the coming weeks with our internal and external stakeholders. Happy graduation season!

Sincerely,

Dr. Martha Garcia

Frequently Asked Questions

    • Q:        Who does Mt. SAC serve?

A:        One of the largest community colleges in California, Mt. SAC serves nearly 20 communities consisting of over 1,000,000 residents and thousands of businesses. Our College’s broad range of educational programs provide students with excellent, affordable higher education for transfer to 4-year universities, while addressing our region’s workforce needs of today and the future.

    • Q:        Why is Mt. SAC’s role in the community so important?

A:        Mt. SAC saves local students and families thousands of dollars by offering an affordable alternative to the skyrocketing cost of four-year universities. Our College wants to continue increasing these affordable opportunities for local students to earn college credits, certifications, and job skills at a reasonable price and then transfer to a four-year university.

    • Q:        What are you doing to prepare our students for jobs?

A:        Good-paying jobs in today’s competitive, global economy demand specialized training. To provide such training, the College plans to upgrade classrooms, labs, and equipment that train students for careers in healthcare, public safety, manufacturing, renewable energy, robotics and technology, and other jobs.

    • Q:        Doesn’t Mt. SAC routinely update its classrooms and campus buildings?

A:        Yes! However, some campus buildings are over 80 years old and need basic improvements, including removing asbestos; repairing leaky roofs; addressing deteriorating restrooms/plumbing; improving handicapped accessibility; protecting drinking water; replacing outdated electrical and air-conditioning systems; and upgrading security and fire safety systems.

    • Q:        What are the community’s educational needs and priorities?

A:        The top four priorities identified by the public in the Spring Community Survey include:

      • Preparing students for transfer to 4-year colleges
      • Removing asbestos, lead paint and mold in aging College facilities
      • Maintaining and improving student safety
      • Continuing Mt. SAC’s fiscal accountability
    • Q:        What’s the next step?

A:        The College is considering the best approach for addressing necessary health/safety upgrades in the older parts of our campus.  We are in the process of collecting stakeholder and community input and would like to hear from you!
