Matthew Judd
Dean, Natural Sciences
Degrees:
Harvard University, University of California, Santa Barbara and Berkeley, B.A.
Claremont Graduate University, M.A.Bio:
Although I was born in a home for unwed mothers in Oakland, CA, I was adopted by two wonderful people who raised me in affluent Marin County. I lucked into privilege rather than being born into it. My second teaching job was at Mt. SAC in 1987, and I fell in love with our mission and our students. I was lucky, but many aren't, and I have had a wonderful career helping students who do not have the advantages I had achieve their goals. I taught English for 20 years, and have been Associate Dean and Dean of Natural Sciences for the last 14 years. I have never forgotten the luck that made my journey easier, and I want to be part of helping others reach their goals. Why do you like participating in the Mountie Mentor Program?
I have learned so much from our students over the years. I feel I have become a better educator. I really like that. But I also want to make sure that our students know they have allies, that we believe in them, want to hear their struggles, and want to help them succeed. I know they are our future.Advice for students:
Believe in yourself and surround yourself with friends who believe in you. Somethings are easy, and some are hard, but all things are possible if you believe in yourself. Don't listen to anyone who doesn't. If you combine internal confidence with hard work, you can accomplish anything you set your mind to.
