Bio:
Hello. My name is Francesca Rinaldi. My students call me “Profe,” “Profe R,” or “Profe Rinaldi.” I am from Lima, Peru, but my family is of Italian descent. I moved to the United States at age 16 to go to college. I went to Pasadena City College the first three years of my “academic life,” and then transferred to UC Irvine through the TAG Program (Transfer Admission Guaranteed). I then went to Grad School at UCLA, where I completed a PhD in Hispanic Languages and Literatures. I have three older siblings: a sister, and two brothers. My sister and I went to an all-girls school taught by Canadian nuns, so we learned English as our second language. My brothers went to an all-boys school where they learned Italian. I think this and many other little details makes us a unique family. We also all married people from multiple nationalities. My sister’s husband is from Korea, and my brothers’ wives are from China and Colombia respectively. My husband is American, but his father is Italian and his mother was Japanese. Funny story, when we get together for an important holiday (because we live very far away from one another), we jokingly say that we are the United Nations. I love our collective multiculturality because it reminds me of my students. ¿Or maybe it is the other way around? I don’t know. What I do know is that I would like to share my life story with you, my dear mentees, and this is only an example of what’s to come. I hope you enjoy the Mountie Mentor Program. Me mudé a Estados Unidos a los 16 años para estudiar mi carrera universitaria. Asistí a Pasadena City College para mis estudios generales, y luego me transferí a UC Irvine. Después, estudié una maestría en UCLA, u en el 2019, terminé un doctorado en Literaturas y Lenguas Hispánicas. Tengo tres hermanos mayores: una hermana y dos hermanos. Mi hermana y yo fuimos a un colegio de mujeres donde nos enseñaban monjas canadienses, entonces aprendimos inglés como nuestra lengua extranjera. Mis hermanos fueron a un colegio de hombres donde aprendieron italiano. Creo que este y otros detallitos nos hace una familia única. Todos estamos casados con personas de múltiples nacionalidades. El esposo de mi hermana es de Corea y las esposas de mis hermanos son de China y de Colombia respectivamente. Mi esposo es americano, pero su papá es italiano y su mamá era japonesa. Una anécdota interesante: cuando nos juntamos para algún día festivo (porque vivimos bastante lejos), siempre bromeamos diciendo que somos las Naciones Unidas. Nuestra multiculturalidad colectiva me encanta porque me recuerda a mis estudiantes, ¿ó será que es a la inversa? No lo sé. Lo que sí sé es que quiero compartir mi vida con ustedes, queridos “mentees”, y esta es solo una muestra de lo que está por venir. Espero que disfruten de este programa y que lleguemos a formar una comunidad unida y resiliente.
