Title: Administrative Specialist I Department: Financial Aid Email: aesquivel33@mtsac.edu

What is your hometown? West Covina

What colleges did you attend? Degrees earned? Mt. Sac and Cal state Fullerton

What motivated you to go to college? I was motivated to attend college to break the generational curse of not being educated enough. The challenging work through earning a degree allows you to learn and grow, feeling appreciated by your family, or making a difference in the lives of others.

Describe your college experience as first-generation. The challenges that I faced were the feeling of being alone, lost, and sometimes discouraged. Especially, during covid-19 I faced a loss of a family member and wanted to quit but my mother pushed me to succeed and i'm so proud that I did.

What unique challenges did you face? The unique challenges that I faced were not listening to others who didn't believe in me or when I had doubts they validated them.

How did you overcome those challenges? I overcame these challenges by staying around those who motivated me to do better and for my overall life goal of wanting to purse a degree.

What did you advise other first-generation students? I advise other First-gen students to stay determine. Yes, it is hard but the difficult things in life are the outcomes we most appreciate.
