What is your hometown? Chula Vista
What colleges did you attend? Degrees earned? I earned my BA at UC Santa Barbara, and my MSW at Cal State Fullerton
What motivated you to go to college? Although no one in my family had ever attained a degree, I was motivated by them and by the chances they didn't receive. My mom did not have the opportunity to go to middle school in her home country, and I was determined to make her proud by making the most of my chance. My drive was fueled by family and the desire to open pathways for them in the future.
Describe your college experience as first-generation. As a first-generation student, I experience massive culture shock and imposter syndrome. I left my diverse hometown and familia behind and entered a new world of academia. I was nervous and excited constantly by the college world since I initially did not know where to begin in seeking support.
What unique challenges did you face? As first-gen, financial and social barriers often stood in my way. I often worried about how I was going to afford my living, and even how to navigate the academic systems. I was even faced with my own misconceptions on asking for help since, culturally it was often frowned upon.
How did you overcome those challenges? I was able to overcome my challenges by seeking out spaces where I felt I belonged. In Latinx and women-led student organizations, I found community and empowerment. I quickly became a student leader and advocate for social justice. This journey led me to discover my passion and pursue my master's degree in social work.
What did you advise other first-generation students? I would advise other first-gen student to not be afraid to seek out support, to apply for scholarships/grants/etc., and to never hide your true self from the world.
