What is your hometown? Pomona, CA

What colleges did you attend? Degrees earned? Mt. San Antonio College
Cal Poly Pomona B.A. and M.A.

What motivated you to go to college? My parents motivated me to go to college so that I would have career opportunities. They provided me the security and support to explore and pursue my passions.

Describe your college experience as first-generation. As a first-generation student, college and life was full of highs and lows! I was able to navigate through the college system with their support and guidance even though we were unfamiliar with the system. Their unconditional support and love allowed me to persevere and cross the stage!

What unique challenges did you face? I had to learn how to balance home life and school! Growing up in a Mexican household, chores came first before school work! I had to carve out time throughout the day to focus on assignments and make sure everything was tidy. There were numerous family events I missed out on due to school and I had to readjust my perspective: homework will always be there but family moments are precious.

How did you overcome those challenges? There were moments throughout my journey that were difficult but I remained focus and dedicated to my goal. My parents knew how important that was to me and provided a space for me to excel. My parents also had to learn to adjust to a new chapter that was full of stress and tears for me.

What did you advise other first-generation students? ¡Échale ganas! It will not be easy but the reward is worth it! Throughout your journey, stop and enjoy the process! Enjoy college and make time to have fun!
