What motivated you to go to college? My family was my biggest motivation to go to college. I grew up in a family of seven. Growing up, we had limited financial resources so I figured college would help me gain resources to have a better life for my family and I. Getting a college degree has impacted me and my family in many positive ways. It was worth the hard work.
Describe your college experience as first-generation. As a first generation student, I faced many periods of confusion, frustration and isolation. However, I learned to lean on my support system to get me through those tough times. My support system included my friends, family, counselors, college staff and student services programs.
What unique challenges did you face? In my last semester of community college, I was enrolled in a chemistry class. On my first exam, I received a D. I seriously thought that I was going to fail the class. I was very overwhelmed. However, I utilized my resources. I went to office hours and EOPS tutoring. Luckily, I passed the class with an "A". This experience taught me to reach out for help in times of struggle.
How did you overcome those challenges? I utilized campus resources such as office hours, counseling, and tutoring. I was part of special programs like Honors, EOPS, and UCLA's AAP. My peers and family were also my support system.
What did you advise other first-generation students? I advise for other first-gen students to find a mentor/femtor and a support system. There are always people trying to help others. Also, don't forget to have fun as you are navigating through your educational journey.
