In the Garden: Piñatas

A Solo Exhibition of work by Roberto Benavidez
Curated by Phoebe Millerwhite

Artwork of Bird

Creatures with eerily human features drawn from medieval illuminated manuscripts, animals plucked from Hieronymus Bosch’s Early Renaissance triptych The Garden of Earthly Delights, birds with latent agendas simmering just below the surface – these are the droll, enigmatic beings that populate East L.A. based artist Roberto Benavidez’s mystical garden of piñatas. A self-described “half-breed, South Texan, queer, figurative sculptor specializing in the piñata form” Benavidez’s work playfully explores themes of race, sexuality, art, sin, humor, ephemerality and beauty. In the Garden: Piñatas places characters from multiple interrelated series of Benavidez’s oeuvre together in one place, with several just-completed works on view for the first time.
