Diana Berger Gallery presents Apperception, a two-person exhibition featuring Devin Lee Johnson and Jennifer Montenegro.
Apperception is the process in which the brain references past experiences to make sense of a
new one: centering cognitive exploration in visual art. Referencing the Thematic Apperception
Test developed in the 1930's, Apperception encourages art interpretation and narrative development by finding familiar shapes,
colors and materials while observing art. The artist's work then becomes a tool for
self-reflection, and the interpretation, an insight of the psyche. The focus shifts
from the artist's intention and onto the viewer's experience. In this new body of
work, Johnson and Montenegro approach similar introspective visual conversations where
scale, line, color, and material engage the imagination.
Devin Lee Johnson is a Southern California based artist, educator and muralist. He
graduated from CSU Monterey Bay with a Bachelor's in Visual and Public Art and a Minor
in Biology in 2014 and received his Master’s in Fine Art from Claremont Graduate University
in 2016. In 2018 Johnson was selected by Draw International, a residency program that
culminated in an exhibition in Caylus, France. His interdisciplinary practice investigates
one’s relationship with line and fosters a playful landscape of continual learning.
Jennifer Montenegro is an artist, educator, and yoga instructor who recently relocated
back to Southern California after residing in the Netherlands for 3 years. She studied
Art History at CSU San Bernardino and received her Master’s in Fine Art in 2016. Her
art practice includes painting, fiber art, photography, and performance to express
the unpredictability of conscious and unconscious emotions that unearth in the process.
