Two-Year Plan for Completing the AA-T Music Degree

Who Is It For?

The two-year plan is recommended for "college-ready" music students who enroll in 3.5 or fewer ensemble units each semester. This includes any student who takes one and only one ensemble each semester. This also includes students who combine either MUS 38 (Ensemble) or MUS 27 (Chamber Winds) with any other instrumental ensemble. Students who exceed 3.5 units of ensemble per semester should consider the three-year plan, as should students who plan on taking several electives.

What Are The Challenges?

The AA-T Music can be a high-unit degree, depending on which ensemble (or ensembles) a student chooses to participate in. To complete this degree in two years, most AA-T Music students will find it necessary to complete some of their General Education coursework during the winter or summer intersession(s).

  • Students enrolled in 1.0 – 2.5 ensemble units per semester should complete at least one GE course during intersession.
  • Students enrolled in 3.0 – 3.5 ensemble units per semester should complete at least two GE courses during intersession.

A maximum of two GE courses may be taken in a single intersession.

A student on the two-year plan should expect his or her semester load to be at or near the maximum for a full-time student (18 units), even if he or she takes GE courses during intersession as recommended above.

What If I’m Not “College-Ready”?

Students who wish to pursue the AA-T Music Degree but are not "college-ready" should visit Counseling in order to formulate an academic plan. The Music Department advises students who are not "college-ready" to complete all remedial English and math coursework before initiating a music degree plan.
