UC Santa Cruz - B.A. Psychology

What motivated you to go to college? As an undocumented immigrant, I felt that I had limited opportunities. I felt that education was the best way to learn new skills, and to gain more knowledge of our education and political system. My passion, to learn, and create opportunities for my community motivated me to attend college.

Describe your college experience as first-generation. As a first-generation college student, I quickly learned that I had to navigate college on my own because my parents were not able to guide me through the process. Although they supported my desire to go to college they did not know how to directly support me with the application and transfer process. I still had a great experience because I found support from staff, faculty, and my peers. I developed a social-network that supported me all the way to graduation.

What unique challenges did you face? Some of the unique challenges that I faced as an undocumented first-generation college student was limited resources for financial assistance. Therefore, I had to apply for several scholarships and on-campus internships.

How did you overcome those challenges? I learned, how to advocate for myself and others through story-telling. Meaning, that I found value in sharing my educational journey with others. The more I shared my challenges, the more I learned about the resources that were available to me. Once I felt pride in my story and upbringing, I learned to let go of the fears that I had about navigating college as a first-gen. Letting go of the fear, also helped me challenge the limiting beliefs that I had about my abilities.

What did you advise other first-generation students? You belong here, find your voice, and share your experiences with others. Support is always available, you just have to find it.
