How to Access your Class!

School of Continuing Education

Step #1: "Reset" your Password

This is the BEST and EASIEST way to access Canvas.

You can skip this step if you already know your password.

  1. Go to Canvas (mtsac.instructure.com)
  2. Click on "Forgot Password"
  3. Enter your username (it's in the Mt. SAC HSR Student Account Information email)
  4. Click on "Recover with Mail"
  5. A password reset email will be sent to your personal email address on file
    • It might give you an alert saying that it's sending the info to yourusername@carbon.super, but it will really send to your personal email

Step #2: Sign Into Canvas

  1. Go to Canvas (mtsac.instructure.com) and log in!
  2. You should see your course tile by 4:00pm on Monday, September 9th, but you do NOT have to start on the first day.

Step #3: Start Class!

You can just start completing work on your own or check in with your instructor via Zoom (link is in Canvas) before starting assignments.

We also recommend that you view the orientation video to get an idea of how the program works!

CANVAS SUPPORT

  • Getting ERROR! Message after clicking on "Forgot Password"?

IF YOU GET AN ERROR MESSAGE that says "error! The server encountered an internal error. Please contact administrator", then you will email us at hsr@mtsac.edu to get the password reset email.

  • Having an issue with your username or can't find it?

You can find your username in the Mt. SAC HSR Student Account Information email.

If you don't have it, please contact us at hsr@mtsac.edu and we can help you.

Just a reminder that your username is NOT your email address... it is a Mt. SAC-generated username that is typically the first letter of your first name, then your last name, and numbers, e.g. jmountie07.

  • Not receiving the Password Reset Email?

Please email hsr@mtsac.edu with the email address you'd like to use and we can update it.

  • Don't see your class yet?

That's ok! Your course(s) will show up at 4pm on Monday, September 9th.

If you don't see your class after September 9th, please email hsr@mtsac.edu for assistance.

  • Authentication Errors

Canvas and the Portal frequently give students an Authentication Error when they try to log in.

Most of the time that just means that the system is overloaded.

    If this happens...

    • Open a new tab and complete the sign-in process again (it won't work if you just refresh the tab)
    • Keep trying (5+ times sometimes)
    • Make sure you are using mtsac.instructure.com
    • Make sure you are using your username from the email we sent (first letter of first name, last name, numbers, e.g. jmountie07), not an email address
    • If that still doesn't work, reset your password again.

IMPORTANT COURSE INFORMATION

  • Optional Orientation
We highly recommend that you take a moment and view the orientation video to learn about the program. This orientation is from 2023-24 and we will have it updated shortly. All of the information is the same, except for the dates.
  • How the Class Works
    • Your class will appear in Canvas by 4pm on September 9th (don’t worry if you don’t see it before then!)
    • Classes are done entirely online, are free, and do not require any textbooks.
    • Your class is available 24/7 and you can create your own schedule.
    • Coursework must be done in order. If you get stuck on an assignment or can't access the next assignment, please send your instructor a message through Canvas or via email (listed on the course homepage). Please note that instructors only work Monday-Thursday from 4pm-8pm, so you might have to wait until Monday if there is an issue on the weekend.
    • You will take the final whenever you have finished the coursework. Please be sure to go into Zoom and let your instructor know that you have completed the course so they can do a final check.
    • Our online classes are “a-g” & NCAA approved, which requires us to use a state-approved curriculum platform. We use Edmentum. Also, HSR has weekly instructor check-ins and discussion boards to meet state requirements.
  • Timelines & Instructor Schedules

The 2024-25 session runs from Monday, September 9th at 4m through Thursday, May 22nd at 8pm.

    • You can start your class any time after it opens, but we recommend you start as soon as possible so you can get it done!
    • You must finish your class(es) by May 22nd at 8pm. Any work turned in after 8pm will not be graded and we do not issue grades for incomplete courses.
    • You can take your final whenever you have finished the coursework, you don't need to wait until the last day.
    • You can complete the class as quickly or slowly as you want as long as you are done by 8pm on July 25th.
    • Pacing guides are also available to help you stay on track in the course. The Canvas modules also have progress notes to let you know what you should be completing each week. Your HSR Counselor can help you with pacing questions as well!
    • Your instructor will be available Monday-Thursday from 4-8pm via Zoom (accessible through Canvas) for check-ins, questions, and tutoring.
    • We will send you and your parent an email with your final grade within a week of course completion.
    • We will also send an official transcript to your high school within a week of course completion.
    • If you don't pass the class, we won't send a grade to you or your school.
    • You can take as many classes as you want before May 22nd. If you're already approved for another class, we will enroll you automatically when you finish your first class. If you need a class that isn't yet approved, just email hsr@mtsac.edu and we will check with your counselor for approval.
  • Required Instructor Check-Ins

The HSR program requires students to check in with their instructors periodically. This gives students an opportunity to ask questions, check their progress, and meet their instructor.

    • Students will check in using the Zoom link on the course homepage in Canvas.
    • Check-ins can be done any time between 4pm-8pm Monday-Thursday.
    • A check-in can be very brief (if the student is making good progress and doesn't have any questions) or longer if the student needs support.
    • Students can also check in more than once per week to get tutoring and assistance.
    • Check-ins are part of the student's grade and are measured by the completion of a weekly "quiz".
  • Transcripts

Your transcripts will be AUTOMATICALLY sent to your high school.

If you need a copy of your transcripts sent to you, another high school, or a college, please complete this form.

Just as a reminder, for college applications, please use our CEEB Code 053703 and not the Mt. San Antonio College code. The College does not issue high school transcripts and uses a different code, which can cause delays and confusion with applications.

  • Parent Information

Your student will have a High School Referral counselor who will contact you if the student is falling behind in class and/or is not passing.

The quickest way to check progress is to have your student sign into Canvas and pull up the grade report (go to the course homepage and select "Grades" from the options on the left). Please note that missing even ONE assignment will result in the student not completing the course, even if their grade is passing (70% or better).

Parents can also get information about student progress any time by contacting the HSR counselor at sjansen1@mtsac.edu.

If your email was listed on the student's application, you will receive a copy of their grade when they finish each course. If you have received any emails from Mt. SAC HSR, then we have your email address and you're all set!

  • Authentication Errors

Canvas and the Portal frequently give students an Authentication Error when they try to log in.

Most of the time that just means that the system is overloaded.

If this happens... Open a new tab and complete the sign-in process again (it won't work if you just refresh the tab)

    Helpful hints:

    • Keep trying (5+ times sometimes)
    • Make sure you are using mtsac.instructure.com
    • Make sure you are using your username from the email we sent (first letter of
first name, last name, numbers, e.g. jmountie07), not an email address
    • If that still doesn't work, reset your password again.
