Online Classes

Mt. SAC ESL offers online classes that can be a good alternative to traditional in-class instruction.  These classes are taught by the same dedicated instructors that teach in the classroom.  We offer two types of online classes:  online (Zoom) and self-paced classes.

Live online class Online classes (Zoom) take place in real-time.  You meet with your teacher and the other students, and all instruction takes place during live Zoom class.  Level classes meet live for 2.5 hours and students should plan to do 1 hour of out of class work per day.  Skills classes (Speaking, Writing, Reading, Pronunciation, etc.) meet fully online.
Online class Self-paced online classes
provide the flexibility of accessing and working through the materials at your own pace. You can study for the class any time.  Work is completed in Canvas and the instructor is available to meet with you weekly.

Students who succeed in online classes:
  • are self-motivated
  • are disciplined
  • are willing to participate and interact with others
  • have basic technology skills (for example, know how to send an email, play a YouTube video, make/receive a video call, write a document in word processing software, do basic internet research)

For the best learning experience, we also strongly encourage all students to participate with their cameras on.

Students should have the following:
  • laptop or desktop computer with a microphone and webcam
  • internet access
  • an email account
