Welcome to Summer High School Referral!

We are excited to welcome you to the Mt. SAC High School Referral Program! Please read all of the information below so you are ready for class.

The first day of class is June 16th and your course will appear in Canvas on June 16th by 3:30pm (we will register you). You will need to attend a First-Day orientation (more details below). The last day of class is July 24th and you cannot submit work after 8pm.

There is a lot of information on this page. If you ever get stuck or have questions, please email us at hsr@mtsac.edu or call us at (909) 274-4937. We are here to help!

Optional (but highly recommend) counselor orientations will be held in early June (see "Mandatory & Optional Orientations" below for dates and the Zoom link). This is a great opportunity to learn more about the program, receive support accessing Canvas, and get your questions answered! You can also view the presentation here!

If you haven't yet applied for a HSR class, you can apply and/or get general program info here.

Get Started

How to Access your Class!

Step #1: "Reset" your Password

Even if you haven't set your Canvas/Mt. SAC password before, this is the best and easiest way to access Canvas.

You can skip this step if you already know your password.

  1. Go to Canvas (mtsac.instructure.com)
  2. Click on "Forgot Password"
  3. Enter your username (it's in the Mt. SAC HSR Student Account Information email)
  4. Click on "Recover with Mail"
  5. A password reset email will be sent to your personal email address on file.
    • It might give you an alert saying that it's sending the info to yourusername@carbon.super, but it will really send to your personal email

Step #2: Sign Into Canvas

You will access your class(es) and instructor Zoom links in Canvas.

  1. Go to Canvas (mtsac.instructure.com) and log in!
  2. You should see your course tile by 3:45pm on Monday, June 16th.
  3. The Zoom link will be on the course homepage.

Step #3: Required First-Day Orientation

All students must attend an instructor-led orientation on Monday, June 16th via Zoom (the link is on the Canvas homepage).

Orientations will be held at 4pm, 5:30pm, and 7pm and you can pick the time(s) that work best for you.

If you cannot make it on June 16th, we will have make-up orientations on June 17th and 18th at 7pm. (There will not be class on Thursday, June 19th in celebration of Juneteenth.)

See "Mandatory & Optional Orientations" below for more information.

Having Trouble Accessing Canvas?
  • Getting ERROR! Message after clicking on "Forgot Password"?

IF YOU GET AN ERROR MESSAGE that says "error! The server encountered an internal error. Please contact administrator", then you will need to contact the Mt. SAC Helpdesk at (909) 274-4357 to get the password reset email.

Please only call the Helpdesk if you get this error. Everyone else can get assistance by emailing hsr@mtsac.edu.

  • Having an issue with your username or can't find it?

You can find your username in the Mt. SAC HSR Student Account Information email.

If you don't have it, please contact us at hsr@mtsac.edu and we can help you.

Just a reminder that your username is NOT your email address... it is a Mt. SAC-generated username that is typically the first letter of your first name, then your last name, and numbers, e.g. jmountie07.

  • Not receiving the Password Reset Email?
Please email hsr@mtsac.edu with the email address you'd like to use and we can update it.
  • Don't see your class yet?

That's ok! Your course(s) will show up at 3:45pm on Monday, June 16th.

However, you should see the "Mountie Student Hub" in April.

If you don't see either, please email hsr@mtsac.edu for assistance.

  • Authentication Errors

Canvas and the Portal frequently give students an Authentication Error when they try to log in.

Most of the time that just means that the system is overloaded.

    If this happens...

        • Open a new tab and complete the sign-in process again (it won't work if you just refresh the tab)
        • Keep trying (5+ times sometimes)
        • Make sure you are using mtsac.instructure.com
        • Make sure you are using your username from the email we sent (first letter of first name, last name, numbers, e.g. jmountie07), not an email address
        • If that still doesn't work, reset your password again.

Important Program Information for Summer 2025 (June 16-July 24)

Please be sure to read all of this info before the first day of class.
  • Mandatory & Optional Orientations

Counselor-led Orientations (Optional, but highly encouraged)

      • The counselor-led orientations will review how to sign in to Canvas and important program information. You can access the Zoom for the orientations here. Please be aware that there is a limit of 300 people in each orientation session.
        • Dates will be announced shortly!
        • Can't make it to the optional orientation? You can view the presentation here.

MANDATORY First-Day Orientations on June 17th

      • The instructor-led First-Day orientations are required to provide information about how your class works (grades, submitting assignments, check-in requirements, etc.). You will access the First-Day orientation(s) IN Canvas.
        • Orientations are Monday, June 16th and you can choose between attending orientation at 4pm, 5:30pm, or 7pm
          • In case you are having trouble accessing Canvas on Monday, don't worry! We will have make-up orientation on Tuesday and Wednesday at 7pm.
        • If you are in two classes:
          • With the same instructor, you only need to attend one orientation
            • Full-year courses (e.g. Chemistry A & B or Economics & Government/Civics) will have the same instructor for both sections.
          • With different instructors, you will need to attend both orientations
      • If you miss orientation and/or don’t sign into your class on the first day, you will be dropped.
      • You can access instructors’ Zooms from the link on the course homepages in Canvas.
      • If your school is still in session on June 16th, please attend orientation and then you can start on the coursework after your finals (or right away!).
  • How the Class Works
    • Your class will appear in Canvas by 3:45pm on June 16th (don’t worry if you don’t see it before then!)
    • Classes are done entirely online, are free, and do not require any textbooks.
    • Your class is available 24/7 and you can create your own schedule.
    • Coursework must be done in order. If you get stuck on an assignment or can't access the next assignment, please send your instructor a message through Canvas or via email (listed on the course homepage). Please note that instructors only work Monday-Thursday from 4pm-8pm, so you might have to wait until Monday if there is an issue on the weekend.
    • You will take the final whenever you have finished the coursework. Please be sure to go into Zoom and let your instructor know that you have completed the course so they can do a final check.
    • Our online classes are “a-g” & NCAA approved, which requires us to use a state-approved curriculum platform. We use Edmentum. Also, HSR has weekly instructor check-ins and discussion boards to meet state requirements.
  • Timelines & Instructor Schedules

The Summer 2025 session runs from Monday, June 16th at 3:45pm through Thursday, July 24th at 8pm.

    • All students must attend the First-Day Orientation on June 16th. (See the orientation schedule section for details.)
    • You must finish your class(es) by July 24th at 8pm. Any work turned in after 8pm will not be graded and we do not issue grades for incomplete courses.
    • You can take your final whenever you have finished the coursework, you don't need to wait until the last day.
    • You can complete the class as quickly or slowly as you want as long as you are done by 8pm on July 24th.
    • Pacing guides are also available to help you stay on track in the course. The Canvas modules also have progress notes to let you know what you should be completing each week. Your HSR Counselor can help you with pacing questions as well!
    • Your instructor will be available Monday-Thursday from 4-8pm via Zoom (accessible through Canvas) for check-ins, questions, and tutoring.
    • We will send you and your parent an email with your final grade in early August.
    • We will send an official transcript to your high school if you pass the class (if you don't pass, we don't send anything).
  • Required Weekly Instructor Check-Ins

The HSR program requires students to check in with their instructors weekly. This gives students an opportunity to ask questions, check their progress, and meet their instructor.

    • Students will check in using the Zoom link on the course homepage in Canvas.
    • Instructors will review their check-in time options at the First-Day Orientation, but times will be between 4pm-8pm Monday-Thursday.
    • A check-in can be very brief (if the student is making good progress and doesn't have any questions) or longer if the student needs support.
    • Students can also check in more than once per week to get tutoring and assistance.
    • Check-ins are part of the student's grade and are measured by the completion of a weekly "quiz".
  • Transcripts

Your transcripts will be AUTOMATICALLY sent to your high school.

If you need a copy of your transcripts sent to you, another high school, or a college, please complete this form.

Just as a reminder, for college applications, please use our CEEB Code 053703 and not the Mt. San Antonio College code. The College does not issue high school transcripts and uses a different code, which can cause delays and confusion with applications.

  • Parent Information

Your student will have a High School Referral counselor who will contact you if the student is falling behind in class and/or is not passing. The counselor will send you an introductory email in June so you have their contact info.

The quickest way to check progress is to have your student sign into Canvas and pull up the grade report (go to the course homepage and select "Grades" from the options on the left). Please note that missing even ONE assignment will result in the student not completing the course, even if their grade is passing (70% or better).

Parents can also get information about student progress any time by contacting the HSR counselor. However, this can take a few days during the summer.

If your email was listed on the student's application, you will receive a copy of their grade in early August. If you have received any emails from Mt. SAC HSR, then we have your email address and you're all set!

  • Authentication Errors

Canvas and the Portal frequently give students an Authentication Error when they try to log in.

Most of the time that just means that the system is overloaded.

If this happens... Open a new tab and complete the sign-in process again (it won't work if you just refresh the tab)

    Helpful hints:

        • Keep trying (5+ times sometimes)
        • Make sure you are using mtsac.instructure.com
        • Make sure you are using your username from the email we sent (first letter of
        • first name, last name, numbers, e.g. jmountie07), not an email address
        • If that still doesn't work, reset your password again.
