Career Outlook

The Department of Labor is forecasting a 17% growth for this industry through 2017. The large number of baby boomers who will be retiring out of this industry could affect those numbers.

People who are starting out in this field and who work on turbine-powered equipment can expect to earn $20.00 to $25.00 per hour to start. Most airlines pay the people who work second or third shift extra. Generally mechanics are earning $33.00 to $35.00 per hour after five years. The highest paid airline mechanics are currently earning $50.00 per hour. Those mechanics are also provided benefits by the company they work for, such as health insurance, dental insurance, eye insurance, paid vacation, the ability to travel by air at greatly reduced rates, and retirement plans.

General aviation mechanics generally start around $15.00 per hour and can expect to top out around $25.00 per hour. Some companies offer health benefits also, but no travel benefits.

People who work in this field often work at airports or surrounding facilities, they often work outside, and sometimes are expected to work up to 30 to 40 feet above the ground. The people who work for the airlines sometimes face the stress of performing their jobs so that an aircraft can meet its flight schedule. Mechanics are expected to lift components that weigh up 75 pounds. All aircraft mechanics are expected to own their own hand tools.

Examples of these types of companies are light aircraft maintenance facilities, turbine aircraft maintenance facilities for aircraft that are operated for jobs such as air ambulance and air charter, engine overhaul shops – both piston and turbine – aircraft and engine appliance overhaul shops, avionics repair and installation shops, and aircraft instrument repair.
