Astrophotography

Here are a few astrophotos.  I used an 8" Meade LX200
telescope with an SBIG STV camera for these shots.

This is a "globular star cluster" called M13, one of several dozen that orbit the milky way galaxy.

Nobody really knows how these came to be, but they are very, very old.

This one is 25,000 light years distant, consisting of as many as 1/2 million stars densely packed.

This is Saturn.  I have never done planet photos before, so this is just a first attempt.

If you look closely you can see atmospheric stripes on the planet, and a black division
(the Cassini division) which divides the ring into two separate rings.

This is Jupiter.  It's a very poor quality photo, because the atmosphere was quite turbulent.

I hope to get a better shot of Jupiter soon, because it is very close to Earth right now.

This is a spiral galaxy called M51.  M51 is a close neighbor --

only 15 million light years away, containing approximately 15 billion stars.

There is actually a small elliptical galaxy colliding with it on the left tail.
