This course teaches the principles and practices used in the management and merchandising
of retail stores. Includes all aspects of the critical buying function,
merchandising, promotional techniques, site selection, layout, staffing, market positioning
and customer service.
Note: Students may not receive credit for both

Course Measurable Objectives:
- Construct profit and loss statement for a retail department based on the financial data for an apparel Department with $200,000 gross sales using Excel.
- Evaluate retail pricing using the retail, cost, and markup components by calculating markup, cumulative markup, and average markup assignment on an apparel product.
- Forecasting markdowns based on the units, unit cost, and unit retail for merchandise in a specific area in an apparel category using Excel.
- Calculating closing book inventory at retail and cost using total merchandise handled and calculate the shortage $ and % based on the physical inventory of a retail department.
- Conduct research to develop an environmental analysis to create a retail forecast for a six-month merchandise plan for a target market within a department in a retail store.
- Create a 6 month merchandise plan for a major retailer based on historical key planning indicators including sales, stock, markdowns, and purchases using Excel.

Students completing FASH 62/BUSS 50 - Retail Store Management and Merchandising will be able to:
- research franchise retailers and develop analysis comparing and contrasting various formats.
- select a specific franchise retailer and develop a business plan to open and operate this business.
